London grandfather scoops £25,000 prize

A London grandfather has won a £25,000 windfall in a London-wide competition aimed at encouraging people to pay council tax by direct debit.
“Mr S”, a bench engineer, in his 60s, was the lucky winner from a pool of more than 985,000 entrants across 20 London boroughs.
The competition was organised alongside BACS Payment Schemes, the organisation behind the direct debit system.
The area for more than 20 years, has paid his council tax by direct debit since 1996.
Mr S, who has two daughters and a step daughter said he was “delighted” with his win, and plans to spend some of his prize on a new car, gifts for the family – including his four grandchildren – a few home improvements, and a trip to visit relatives in Italy.
The lucky winner said paying by direct debit meant he never missed a payment, didn’t have to remember to post a cheque or visit the bank or post office.
More than 35,000 Haringey council tax payers already pay by direct debit. It is the simplest way to pay and also saves the council money – meaning more funds are available for key services.
Cllr Joe Goldberg, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “It’s fantastic news that a local family has scooped this prize, which I’m sure is going to have a huge impact on their lives.
