Council cuts carbon with new technology
Haringey Council is using new technology to cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions from its council buildings.
The council is to use a voltage optimisation system that can control and reduce the average voltage levels into the building to provide energy savings of up to 10 per cent.
Cllr Charles Adje (pictured), cabinet member for resources at the council, said the introduction of the system was one part of the borough’s green strategy.
He said: "Haringey aims to be one of the greenest boroughs in London. That means taking a lead on our own use of energy.
"This is proven technology which reduces harmful emissions. It has the added benefit for taxpayers of cutting our electricity bills."
The new system will cut CO2 emissions by 268 tonnes annually (equivalent to 60 tonnes of carbon emissions), and reduce council energy costs by an estimated £46,500 a year.
To begin, the technology is being installed at the council's Wood Green headquarters offices, River Park House, Alexandra House and 48 Station Road, and in the Wood Green central library.
The system is already up and running in Hornsey library, saving energy costs and CO2 emissions without affecting services or IT equipment.
Cllr Adje, added: "As a large organisation running a huge range of services we spend money on everything from stationery to major construction projects. We want to spend that money in ways that will deliver value for money and safeguard resources for future generations."
